Fun stuff. Kind of serendipitous too in that I recently purchased the latest Dannii Minogue "best of" album with the DVD that features her videos. Dannii Minogue did a cover of Baby Love in 1991 that I was wholly unaware of until the other night. But I couldn't get the feeling out of my head that I'd heard this track before and it wasn't Minogue's pipes that sang it.
So just now I got done doing some searches on allmusic.com for Dannii Minogue and found out who actually penned the music. Then when I looked through the list of all 216 songs called Baby Love, I found Regina in the list. Something there seemed really distantly familiar. I plugged in a bit more into Wikipedia and Google and hit your site after the Google search. Then I saw the video... and I was reminded of a Summer sometime in the 80s.
I was just barely out of Junior High and I remember hearing a whole slew of Madonna imitators. Suzie Q with Queen of Hearts a couple other more forgettable ones and also Regina with Baby Love. I also remember that Summer going on vacation with one of the highlights being access to cable since my folks didn't have it. That meant I stayed up way too late watching whatever music video channels were available no matter how lame.
I can't remember for sure, but it was either Chicago or Miami that Summer and there was a local (non-cable) station that was all music videos. All five of them. In endless rotation. With no DJ. I believe Baby Love was one of them. Somehow that memory (and I have an excellent memory for really odd little details) had escaped me until just now. I also remember hearing that track quite a bit on the trip while searching for the major pop station in each city we drove through. My parents were quite patient.
So thanks for recovering a trivial but quite valuable and innocent memory from 20 or so years ago. :) In all my searching so far, I find nothing about where Regina is today. Is she still writing songs in the background? Is she someone's mom? ISsshe a real estate agent (See Rex Smith, the Everlasting Love/Pirates of Penzance dude)? Is she a bitter feminist folk singer (I quite like them actually)? Whatever she is, I hope all is well with the world for her. t's a damn shame there's not more about her whereabouts today.
